Description: For five days every April, there is a portion of Guelph who won't sleep much, may skip a meal or two and will only appear as an excited blur; clutching only what they will need for the next few hours and a pocket-sized itinerary. But these people will also be the happiest you'll meet. That is the power and the joy of Kazoo! Fest. For its ninth year, the festival dedicated to showcasing emerging musicians and artists held its annual celebration of art, music, community and performance at several locations throughout downtown Guelph. In fact, if you happened to wander around town at all from April 6th-10th, you would be hard pressed not to have found the a semi-grinning eye-patch wearing cat meeting your gaze. The organization and volunteers behind Kazoo! are musicians, artists, and cultural producers who believe that innovative new music and art can strengthen communities and bring people together; and nowhere is that more on display than these five days in April. Collaboration and creativity were everywhere you looked. Retail businesses became marketplaces and music venues; a school gym played the role of an art gallery; bands traded late-night sets for pancakes and early mornings and a boxing ring played host to a musical grand finale. It was exciting, it was entertaining, it was unique and most of all, it was important. In a world that speaks often of the idea of fostering community, it's always a pleasure to see one flourishing right in your own backyard.
